Vmware Horizon View Protocol Failure

Vmware horizon view protocol failure rate

Ever since I updated my Horizon environment to View Agent 6.1 (from 6.0.2), I get either customization timeouts or protocol failures. This does not happen to all VM's in this pool, only a small portion. I'm not sure what is causing this. The only thing that I did in this master image was install the new version of the view. Ouch, sorry I didn't think of this (I assumed you had set it up). It may be worth reading the View deployment guide. Alternative It might be worth calling in a VMware EUC partner to run a VMware View health check, do some training. Its actually a really nice solution from management once everything is setup and working just fine.

Before you start troubleshooting Horizon and Blast connections, read this guide to help you understand how a VMware Horizon Client connects to a resource. With this insight, you can determine the best architecture, understand the traffic flow and network ports, and troubleshoot more effectively. Dec 26, 2016 As a part of my project I was working with VMware Horizon View 7 with VSAN Datastore where I got a chance to learn APP VOLUME and INSTANT CLONING feature by VMware. These features really interesting where VMware tried beat other VDI competitors I had created a pool of 250 virtual desktops with some task. The VMware Horizon Client™ enables remote access to centrally managed View desktops and applications from a wide range of endpoint devices. The Horizon Client runs on the operating systems of endpoint devices— Windows, Mac OS, or Linux for conventional desktop and laptop computers or iOS or Android for smartphones and tablets.

Failure
  • In View Administrator, the desktop reports the status error:
    Configuration Error
    or
    Protocol Failure
  • The entitled user is able to connect to the desktop using PCoIP, but cannot connect using Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP).
  • The Protocol failure state may be displayed when VMware Horizon HTML Access failed but PCoIP and RDP are working and the desktops are available and View Client devices can access them through PCoIP or RDP.
  • In the debug logs, you see entries similar to:
    PROTOCOL><PROTOCOL><NAME>RGS</NAME><PORT>42966</PORT><STATUS>unavailable
    </STATUS><ERROR-CODE>PROTOCOL_ERR_PORT_NOT_LISTENING</ERROR-CODE></PROTOCOL><PROTOCOL><NAME>PCOIP</NAME><PORT>0</PORT>
    <STATUS>negotiate</STATUS></PROTOCOL> <AGENTREADY>true</AGENTREADY><ACCEPTINGCONNECTIONS>false
    </ACCEPTINGCONNECTIONS><ERROR-CODE>AGENT_ERR_PROTOCOL_FAILURE
Note: The preceding log excerpts are only examples. Date, time, and environmental variables may vary depending on your environment.
  • In the PCOIP logs, you may see entries similar to:
    MM/DD/YYYY, 07:51:31.773> LVL:0 RC:-500 IMG_FRONTEND :cSW_HOST_FRONTEND::open_display - Error attaching to SVGADevTap, error 1: Failed

Vmware Horizon View Protocol Failure Recovery

I had created a pool of 250 virtual desktops with some task, knowledge and power users.I was testing boot storm scenarios with VSAN datastore. while doing so I rebooted 250 Virtual desktops from vCenter and trying capturing time to see it available in View Administrator which took approximately 14 Min.

View

Out 250 , 247 virtual desktops started showing available however 3 virtual desktops were showing Protocol failure error .

I tried visiting lot of blog but couldn’t find any concrete solution to this, only questioned asked on the blog hence I decided to note down the steps and share the resolution with everyone.

Problem Statement : VMware Horizon View 7 – Protocol Failure error for Virtual Desktops

Resolution :

  1. Go to View Administrator and check and note down name for desktops which are showing “Protocol Failure” error say e.g. Machine-43
  2. Go to vCenter and login to Desktop Machine-43 and check view Administrator where it shows status for the machine as “Connected”, now sign-out immediately
  3. Go to web Client > Power> Restart Guest and reboot the machine
  4. Go to view Administrator and check for the status where it will show “Available”

That’s it !!!
